504 Squadron was formed as a day bomber squadron at Hucknall on 26th March 1928.
Shortly before the outbreak of World War 2 the squadron was activated as part of Fighter Command, and operated from numerous British and European airfields during the war.
During 1940 Wattisham was suffering from Luftwaffe bombing raids, so Hurricanes from 504 Squadron spent some time detached from Debden in an attempt to disrupt these Luftwaffe raids.
